Do backlink generators still work? No. A backlink generator is a tool that creates links to your site automatically, usually on pages that exist only to hold links. Google's spam policies list using automated programs or services to create links to your site as link spam, so at best these links are ignored.

This is a retired cheat. It is here to explain what it was and why it stopped, not to teach it.

What the cheat was

You pasted your URL into a website, pressed a button, and the tool created hundreds of pages or profile entries that mentioned your link. Some tools submitted your URL to stats sites and "whois" pages, others to forums and guest books. In minutes your backlink count in a checker went up.

I used backlink generators on my own sites years ago, along with backlink checkers to copy competitors' links. It felt like progress because the numbers went up. Looking back, the copying part was mostly a gimmick: most of those links could not be copied at all.

Why it stopped working

In April 2012 Google announced an update aimed at sites that break its guidelines with link schemes and similar tactics. It became known as Penguin. Since then, Google has kept getting better at spotting links that nobody placed for readers. Its spam policies define link spam as creating links mainly to manipulate rankings, and they name automated link creation directly.

After that crackdown I stopped using all of these tactics out of caution. I did not notice a visible drop at the time, but I also had no good data to check. That is the real risk with generators: you never know which links count against you.

No. The pages these tools create have no readers and no editor, which is exactly what Google's systems look for. The best case is that Google ignores them and you wasted time. The worse case is a messy link profile you may later want to clean up with a disavow file.

Do this instead

Earn a few links from real pages. The Unlinked Mention Cheat finds people who already talk about you and asks them for the link. Hand-checked directories that still review submissions are another honest option.

So, do backlink generators still work? They create numbers, not trust. Ten minutes on one real link is worth more than a thousand generated ones. For the full story of what Google punishes, see backlink penalties and how to recover.

Frequently asked questions

They can put your site at risk, because Google's spam policies name automated link creation as link spam. Most often Google simply ignores these links.

No. Backlink checkers that show who links to you are useful. The problem is tools that create links for you automatically.

Usually nothing. If you see a manual action in Search Console or a large number of spammy links, consider a disavow file.
